Pick any TWO modern social theories from our course syllabus. Critically compare, contrast and reflect on the similarities and differences in their theoretical approaches. (You are expected to also engage empirical evidence in your discussion.)

Examples of the title:

1. How are symbolic meanings generated? A comparison between Mauss and Goffman.

2. Bourdieu vs. Latour: Different ontologies of habitus-field-capital and actor-network theory.

Q2: Empirical-oriented

Identify a specific social issue. Use any TWO modern social theories from our course syllabus to understand, interpret and analyze its mechanism. (You are expected to also engage theoretical approaches in your discussion.)

Examples of the title:

1. Must wear a Mask: Understanding mask wearing in Hong Kong from the perspectives of symbolic interactionism and social dramaturgy.

2. Hong Kong anxious students’ deconstructed utopia – what can we learn from Mannheim and Lyotard to know ourselves?

Requirement:

• Word limits: 3000 words (references and appendixes are excluded from the word count)
• In the essay, you should precisely define the respective sociological concepts in your own words.
