As mentioned by Prof. Palmer in his introduction to the course, the approach for this course is anthropological. One important aspect of this is to do participatory observations. To participate, to observe, to feel, to notice with your body, mind and spirits …… something that AI could not replace you in this task!

This task of “Fieldnotes Taking” is designed to help you better aware of what you have experienced in the field visits and also help you to get a higher grade in your assignment Fieldtrip reflective essay!

This task is composed of 2 parts:

  1. A scan of your raw notes (as long as you like) </aside>

These are the notes you took during/just after participant observation (namely, the field visits).

The participation observation can begin from when you arrive at a physical location, or when you log-in to your field site, observe or participate in a ritual.

Describe what it is to “be there” and interact in that space.

They can be in your handwriting and in any language you choose. You can even draw if it helps.(We don’t have to understand them, we just want to see them). Be sure to anonymize if necessary.

Be mindful of your use of phone as many experiences in the religious communities might require you to fully concentrate at the moment and avoid the distractions of electronic devices. I would suggest that you can bring a small paper notepad and a pen to take notes if needed. Or you can simply take notes right after the visits.

If you want to take photos, remember to ask for the consent before you do so.
